Elder Abuse Resources
Sadly, elder abuse is more common that it should be. Many older adults can fall victim to elder abuse. Predators do not discriminate. A wheelchair-bound elder is just as likely to be preyed upon as a vibrant, active senior. Elder abuse takes many forms, from violence against the elderly, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and even financial abuse.
Many of these older adults are abused because they are unable to defend themselves or even speak. In fact, only 1 out of every 14 cases of elder abuse are reported to authorities. And, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse, approximately 90% of abusive acts against the elderly are committed by members of the victim’s family.
However, there are a number of signs and areas that loved ones can watch for to ensure that the senior in their life does not fall victim to elder abuse. Empress Home Care presents a list of resources designed to help you learn more about elder abuse, hear from experts in the field, and how you can protect your loved one from becoming a victim.
